Duties and Responsibilities
This International Individual Contractor (IIC) position is located in the Engineering Section of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), with the duty station in Juba, Republic of South Sudan. Under the delegated authority of the Chief Engineer and the direct overall supervision of the head of Electromechanical Cell, the Individual Contractor will carry out the following duties: Operate and monitor MV distribution systems, including feeders, substations, transformers, and switchgear. • Perform switching operations in accordance with approved operational and safety procedures. •Monitor load profiles, voltage levels, and overall system performance to ensure network stability and operational efficiency. • Develop and execute preventive and corrective maintenance plans for all MV equipment and associated infrastructure. • Identify and troubleshoot MV network faults, feeder trips, equipment failures, and abnormal operating conditions. • Coordinate and participate in periodic testing, servicing, and inspection of MV switchgear, transformers, and protection systems. • Lead fault investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions. • Collaborate with protection, construction, and control room teams to plan and execute outages and system restorations. • Participate in testing, commissioning, and energization of new MV feeders, substations, transformers, and associated installations. • Support network upgrades, modifications, and expansion projects with technical input and field implementation oversight. • Ensure adherence to electrical safety standards, including lock out/tag out (LOTO), isolation procedures, and permit to work protocols. • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure all operations comply with organizational and international electrical standards •Prepare and submit technical reports covering maintenance activities, outages, system performance, and incident investigations. • Maintain accurate records of operational logs, maintenance schedules, and network performance metrics. • Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Engineer or Head of EM Cell. • Check availability medium voltage components in Warehouse, predict future requirements based on maintenance guidelines and operational service line of MV components and propose earlier acquisitions of critical components.
Qualifications/special skills
A minimum of Diploma in Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline is required. A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in medium voltage transmission system is required. Technical knowledge of MV systems (11kV–33kV), substations, protection systems, distribution network equipment and international electrical safety standards is required. Knowledge of SCADA systems and protection relays is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the positions advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required.
