CAMAAY (Cameroon Association of Active Youths) is a nonprofit working on community development across Cameroon, in areas from agriculture and education to health, the environment, and youth programs. Our work runs on donations and grants. Under its digital literacy and STEM programs, CAMAAY wants to understand how young people in Cameroon access, perceive, and use AI. The findings will show whether Cameroon is well suited to initiatives that widen access to AI, including tools that work without reliable internet, and will guide CAMAAY’s awareness activities and its conversations with potential partners. This assignment covers the design stage only; the study itself is carried out in person by CAMAAY’s local team once funding is in place. It contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 4 (quality education) and Goal 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure).
The online volunteer will design the full research package for a study CAMAAY plans to run on young people’s knowledge, perceptions, and use of artificial intelligence in Cameroon. All work is remote, and every deliverable is a document submitted online. The volunteer will:
Draft a research proposal with clear objectives, research questions, and methodology
Design the sampling strategy for a target of around 200 to 300 participants aged 16 to 30 (secondary and university students), across two or three regions including at least one Anglophone and one Francophone region, using a random sampling approach
Write the research protocol, including informed consent procedures and, for participants under 18, parental or guardian consent, along with data protection and basic ethics considerations
Develop the data collection tools (a structured questionnaire and, if useful, short interview guides) designed for in-person use, written in English and ready to be translated and adapted for French-speaking regions
Prepare a realistic fieldwork budget estimate (transport, feeding, and data collection materials), broken down by region and participant, to support later fundraising
The work is remote and flexible.
