Background: EMERGENCY is an independent, neutral and non-political Italian organization that provides free, high quality medical and surgical treatment to the victims of war, landmines and poverty. EMERGENCY promotes a culture of peace, solidarity and respect for human rights.

Since February 1998, Emergency has been running a Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre in Sulaymaniyah, providing free and long-term treatments for disabled and amputee patients.

Duration: 6 months, with possibility of extension

Location: EMERGENCY Rehabilitation and Social Reintegration Centre in Sulaymaniyah

Working hours: Part time - the working schedule will be defined monthly according to organizational and operational needs

Reporting to: Rehab Director

Salary range: 300 USD - 400 USD

Scope of the position: The role contributes to EMERGENCY’s communication and media activities in Iraq, supporting both content production and press office activities in alignment with the organization’s communication strategy. The Field Communication Officer reports functionally to the Communication Team in Milan (HQ) and hierarchically to the Director of the Rehabilitation Center of Sulaymaniyah.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Content Production & Digital Communication

· Collects and produces stories and written testimonies from patients, staff, and the project context for communication and fundraising purposes.

· Produces and acquires photo, video, and audiovisual materials in compliance with data protection regulations and EMERGENCY policies.

· Creates video content (events, interviews, testimonies, contextual footage) for communication and fundraising campaigns.

· Drafts press releases related to public events, hospital activities, and relevant news, in coordination with the Central Communication Office.

· Contributes to the production of information materials in local languages (e.g. flyers, posters), liaising with central editorial and digital teams and the Director of the Rehabilitation Center.

· Manages local online channels under the supervision of the digital team, including content creation, moderation, and interaction with users, in line with EMERGENCY guidelines and approval processes.

· Supports the Editorial Area with information gathering and, when possible, drafting content for institutional publications.

Press Office & Media Relations

· Supports local communication planning and contributes to increasing the project’s visibility through media and digital channels.

· Manages relations with national and international media, including handling requests, gathering information, and proposing story ideas.

· Accompanies journalists during field visits, providing logistical and editorial support.

· Develops and maintains a network of local media contacts and an updated database of journalists and media actors.

· Organizes press events and conferences and supports media training activities for staff.

· Monitors local and national media, political discourse, and relevant trends, providing regular press reviews and reports.

· Collects and shares project data and statistics with the Press Office and communication departments.

· When required, and in coordination with the Director of the Rehabilitation Center and the Press Office, may act as spokesperson with local and international media.

Job Requirement:

· University Degree in Media or Journalism Studies;

· Minimum 3 years of continuous experience in communication or journalism;

· Excellent written and oral proficiency in English, Kurdish and Arabic;

· Excellent command of MS Office (Word, Excel);

· Ability to produce high-quality audiovisual materials using semi-professional equipment (Handy Cam, DSLR, Mirrorless), including external microphones;

· Ability to produce high-quality photographic content (DSLR, Mirrorless);

· Competence in photo and video editing software (Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere or equivalents);

· Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills for journalistic content and press releases;

· Understanding of social media publishing and monitoring mechanisms (Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, X.com, etc.);

· Knowledge of humanitarian issues in Iraq and familiarity with the local media landscape;

· Availability to travel within the country, if necessary;

· Previous experience with NGOs or in the humanitarian/health sector is an asset;

· Experience working with local media and an existing network of contacts is an asset;

· Knowledge of other regional languages is an asset;

· Having access to personal audiovisual equipment is considered an asset, although not a requirement.
