Our team and mission

Space technology, and satellite communications in particular, have a significant impact on our daily lives. The satellite communications sector is one of the most dynamic segments of the space industry, with evolving business strategies, the emergence of new actors, and shifting user demands driving profound change.

The Connectivity Market and Business Intelligence Section is responsible for the analysis and business intelligence of markets and businesses relevant to resilience and communication, as well as for defining and providing market guidance for the Directorate’s programme and business development. As part of our dynamic, collaborative, and passionate team, you will help shape the future of the space industry through cutting-edge market intelligence activities.

Field(s) of activity for the internship

Recently, the space sector has been evolving at a rapid pace. This change has mainly been triggered by the emergence of New Space actors from various parts of the world and an enormous rise of start-ups in the space economy. This new era has also seen the re-emergence of system concepts, such as constellations, and the adoption of advanced technologies, including new frequency bands, artificial intelligence, and autonomous collision avoidance. For commercial satellite applications, it is becoming increasingly challenging to keep track of and understand the underlying movements, initiatives, actors, and technology developments worldwide.

In that context, ESA has been enhancing its Market and Business Intelligence (BI) activities, and intends to reinforce its toolset, infrastructure and data systems to respond to such dynamism and capitalise on state-of-the-art BI capabilities.

The main priorities are:

  • improving the dissemination and accessibility of information;
  • enabling data integration from multiple sources;
  • developing tools for interactive visual data analysis.

As an intern, you will have the following tasks:

  • contributing to the further development of Market and Business Intelligence capabilities;
  • supporting the design and implementation of data integration solutions;
  • applying these developments to the satellite communications domain;
  • helping transform raw data into actionable insights for the industry.
