Trustee
Help shape BNMT’s next chapter and secure lasting support for health equity in Nepal.
The opportunity
BNMT UK is seeking a Trustee to govern BNMT UK. You will bring strategic judgement, fresh perspectives and commitment to a partnership rooted in Nepali leadership. Expertise in fundraising or digital communication is a particular priority as we grow income, reach new supporters and build sustained commitment to our work.
ROLE: Trustee of the Britain Nepal Medical Trust
STATUS: Voluntary and unpaid; reasonable agreed expenses may be reimbursed
TERM: Normally three years, within BNMT’s staggered Board cycle
MEETINGS: Two half-day meetings in person in London each year, plus two intermediate 90-minute teleconferences
CONTRIBUTION: Meeting preparation and occasional agreed contributions between meetings
The partnership
For 60 years, the Britain Nepal Medical Trust has worked to improve health and reduce poverty in Nepal through equitable access to care, locally led programmes and applied research.
Today, BNMT UK provides funding, advocacy, relationships and strategic support to Birat Nepal Medical Trust (BNMT Nepal), an independent, Nepali-led organisation. The two organisations are legally distinct; BNMT Nepal leads and delivers programmes in Nepal.
Your strategic contribution
You will govern BNMT UK and help shape its future. Programme leadership and delivery sit with BNMT Nepal.
- Set direction. Help the Board choose priorities and assess progress against BNMT’s mission.
- Secure lasting support. Shape a sustainable income strategy, strengthen relationships and help BNMT reach new supporters.
- Strengthen the partnership. Support shared priorities with BNMT Nepal, respecting Nepali leadership and mutual accountability.
- Provide sound oversight. Safeguard charitable funds, oversee risk and uphold financial, safeguarding and regulatory responsibilities.
Priority capabilities
We seek strong experience in at least one of the following, with a willingness to contribute across both:
- Fundraising. A record of building donor relationships, opening networks and turning a persuasive case for support into sustainable income.
- Digital communication. Experience of growing audiences and converting engagement into lasting support through clear storytelling and effective digital strategy.
What you bring
- Commitment to health equity, locally led development and BNMT’s mission.
- Strategic judgement, integrity and confidence to challenge constructively and share responsibility for Board decisions.
- Leadership or decision-making experience, alongside the ability to listen and work respectfully across cultures.
- An understanding of trustee oversight, or a willingness to develop it, and time to contribute.
Knowledge of Nepal, the Nepali diaspora or UK charity governance would be valuable. A clinical or global-health background is not required.
A Board with broader perspectives
We welcome applications from all backgrounds and particularly encourage people from the Nepali diaspora, women, and people from historically oppressed or under-represented communities. We value lived experience and are committed to an accessible appointment process.
Joining the Board
Trustees receive an induction and are expected to prepare for meetings, contribute as agreed and uphold BNMT’s policies on conflicts of interest and confidentiality.
