Duties and Responsibilities

Background: This position is located in the Decision-Support and Data Science Division. The Decision-Support and Data Science Division (DSDSD) is part of ESCWA's broader modernization and innovation efforts, providing advanced analytics and decision-support services within ESCWA, other UN entities, and Member States. Aligned with the UN 2.0 agenda and grounded in strategic foresight, DSDS leverages data-driven insights, emerging technologies, and scenario-based planning to anticipate trends and proactively inform policymaking and operations. Its core functions include data integration and management; data quality assurance; advanced analytics and modeling; machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions; real-time dashboards and performance reporting; and data visualization and business intelligence and the design and development of specialized digital decision-support tools. Through these capabilities, DSDS empowers evidence-based decision-making, fosters organizational efficiency, and catalyzes strategic innovation across the region, supporting sustainable development outcomes regionally and globally. The IT Systems Operations Assistant Individual Contractor will contribute to the enhancement of ESCWA's IT services monitoring program, virtualization environments, and security operations by proactively identifying problems and risks, and coordinating with relevant stakeholders to minimize the impact on service delivery. The Contractor will work closely with the Cloud & Infrastructure and Cyber Security teams. Tasks and Responsibilities: The IT Systems Operations Assistant will be responsible for the following tasks: - Troubleshooting and Incident Management: Investigate infrastructure and application issues, perform log analysis and root cause analysis, document findings, and propose/implement corrective actions to resolve incidents and minimize service disruptions. - Cloudflare Administration and Security Operations: Manage and monitor domains hosted on Cloudflare, analyze traffic patterns and security events, create and maintain custom Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules, and implement mitigation strategies against malicious traffic and attacks. - Traffic Analysis and Security Monitoring: Collect and analyze Cloudflare metrics, traffic analytics, and security data to identify abnormal behavior, attack patterns, bot activity, and performance issues, while providing recommendations for improving security and service availability. - Proxmox Virtualization Management: Install, configure, maintain, and monitor Proxmox environments and Ubuntu/Linux servers, create and manage virtual machines, monitor cluster and storage health, perform operating system administration, system updates, security hardening, troubleshooting, and infrastructure maintenance, and ensure the stability, security, and availability of production environments. - Backup and Recovery Operations: Create and manage virtual machine snapshots, monitor backup processes, verify backup integrity, and support recovery procedures to ensure business continuity and disaster readiness. - Magento Multi-Tenant Platform Administration: Perform administrative and operational activities for the Magento multi-tenant (ECAP) platform, build and resolve CI/CD pipeline issues, and provide ongoing operational support. - Documentation and Technical Reporting: Maintain technical documentation, operational procedures, configuration records, troubleshooting guides, incident reports, and implementation documentation for infrastructure and security-related activities. - Project Support and Technical Implementations: Contribute to infrastructure, cloud, virtualization, and security projects by implementing configurations, supporting deployments, testing solutions, and documenting technical changes.

Qualifications/special skills

A First Level University degree in Telecommunication, Information Technology, Computer Science or a related area is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of 1 year of professional work experience across virtualization platforms (such as Proxmox), Linux system administration, web application firewalls (such as Cloudflare), database clustering (PostgreSQL/Patroni), and incident or vulnerability tracking is required. Familiarity with modern enterprise platforms, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud integration is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.

Recruitment for this position is on a local basis. The incumbent is required to have the legal right to live and work in the specified working location.
